Appearance of Bronopol, 2-bromo-2-nitrpropane-1, 3-diol, is white crystalline powder, an organic-nonoxide compound that is used as an antimicrobial. Bronopol could oxidize sulfhydryl group in bacterial enzyme, inhibit the activity of dehydrogenase to cause irreversible damage to cytomembrane. Bronopol has excellent effect on killing gram-negative bacteria, in particular pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Under extreme alkaline conditions, bronopol degrades in aqueous solution and very low levels of formaldehyde are generated. Free formaldehyde is not responsible for the biological activity associated with bronopol. 

Bronopol could be used in various industrial applications, including air washer systems, oil field, air conditioning systems, cooling water systems, paper mills, metal working fluids, absorbent clays, printing inks, paints, adhesives and consumer products.
