Common Food Additives
Aug 10, 2026
Food additives are artificial or natural substances added to food to improve its quality, color, aroma, and flavor,as well as for preservation, freshness, and processing needs. This includes food flavorings, base ingredients in chewing gum, processing aids in the food industry, and nutritional fortifiers.
The use of food additives should meet the following basic requirements:They should not pose any health hazard to humans;they should not mask food spoilage;they should not mask quality defects in the food itself or during processing,or be used for adulteration, falsification,or counterfeiting;they should not reduce the nutritional value of the food;and their usage should be minimized while achieving the desired effect.
Food additives may be used in the following situations:
To maintain or improve the nutritional value of the food;as a necessary ingredient or component of certain special dietary foods;to improve the quality and stability of the food and enhance its sensory characteristics;and to facilitate the production, processing, packaging, transportation,or storage of the food.
In daily life, there's no need to panic about additives. In fact,as long as they meet national food additive requirements, their safety is generally guaranteed, and there's no need to worry excessively.Food additives must undergo risk assessment and obtain national approval.Instead of worrying about food additives,it's better to focus on developing good eating habits and obtaining comprehensive and balanced nutrition from food, which can also reduce food safety risks.
Here are some common food additives worth learning about!
Sodium Benzoate:A preservative that inhibits the growth and reproduction of mold and bacteria. It is considered low in toxicity and has a certain safe usage range.Consuming it within this range is relatively safe.
Potassium Sorbate:A preservative that inhibits the growth and reproduction of harmful microorganisms. It is metabolized into carbon dioxide and water. It is widely used and generally considered safe.
Sodium/Potassium Nitrite:A preservative and color-protecting agent, mainly used in meat products, especially cured meats. It not only prevents spoilage but also brightens the color of the meat.It inhibits Clostridium botulinum. When used appropriately,it is safe for consumption.
Sucralose:A sweetener,600 times sweeter than sucrose. It is artificially synthesized, participates almost entirely in human metabolism,is low in calories, and is usually listed last on the ingredient list.
Tartrazine:A synthetic coloring agent, primarily used for coloring.National standards stipulate very low quantities, and these limits cannot be exceeded. It can be used for coloring food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, animal feed, tobacco, toys, packaging, etc.
Caramel Color:A coloring agent with four production methods, all made from carbohydrates. It is frequently found in some dark brown foods.
Carrageenan:An emulsifier,stabilizer,and thickener,extracted from algae.It is mainly used in jellies,gummies,and ice cream.
Gelatin:A thickener,a partially hydrolyzed product of collagen, mainly extracted from animal connective tissue. It is used in jellies, gummies, and desserts.
Sodium Bicarbonate:An acidity regulator and stabilizer, commonly known as"baking soda."It is generally added to soda water and pasta. When used according to standards,it poses no harm.
Monosodium Glutamate(MSG):A flavor enhancer, also the main component of MSG,which enhances flavor.Within normal ranges,it will not harm health.Talc,an anti-caking agent,is permitted for use only in candied fruit products and in confectionery processing and fermentation extraction;its use is discouraged.
Ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C,is commonly used as a nutritional supplement and antioxidant, and can also be used as a wheat flour improver.Excessive supplementation is not beneficial to health.
